Bertha was seriously injured at her home on Avondale Street when a parachute mine destroyed 2 shelters, 10 houses and a school in the Ravenscroft Avenue and Avondale Street area during the final raid on Belfast.

She later died of her wounds in the Royal Victoria Hospital.

At least 20 other people were killed in the incident including her husband William.

They are both buried in the mass grave at Belfast City Cemetery.
