David Baird was killed when a parachute mine destroyed 2 shelters, 10 houses and a school in the Ravenscroft Avenue and Avondale Street area during the final raid on Belfast. At least 20 people were killed in the incident.

He is buried at Belfast City Cemetery - Glenalina Extension, plot B 173.
