John lost his life at the home of his parents-in-law on Ballynure Street during the Easter Tuesday Raid. His wife Una, daughter Joan, parents-in-law Jeremiah and Lavina, and brothers in law Desmond, Jeremiah, William, Robert, Jack and Cecil were also killed. The Douglas family who had taken shelter with the Clarkes were also killed.

His body was taken to the Falls Road Baths where he was identified by his father.

John is buried in Belfast City Cemetery.
