John was killed when a shelter on Thorndyke Street was destroyed by a bomb during the Easter Tuesday Raid. At least 18 people were killed in this incident including his parents, Robert and Margaret and his sisters Mary, Martha and Elizabeth.

He is buried in Belfast City Cemetery with his sister Mary.
