Ralph was killed when a parachute mine destroyed 2 shelters, 10 houses and a school in the Ravenscroft Avenue and Avondale Street area during the final raid on Belfast.

At least 20 people, including his grandparents William and Agnes, aunt Charlotte, and cousins Jean, Agnes and Martha and William and were killed in the incident.
