William McGowan was killed along with his wife, Bertha when a parachute mine destroyed 2 shelters, 10 houses and a school in the Ravenscroft Avenue and Avondale Street area during the final raid on Belfast.
At least 20 other people were killed in the incident.
His body was taken to St George's Market where he was identified by his nephew.
Both William and his wife Bertha are buried in the mass grave at Belfast City Cemetery.
