Whats On

1941 German Air Raids: Brave Conduct in Civil Defence by Nigel Henderson

The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, History Hub Ulster and Northern Ireland War Memorial welcome you to a talk by Nigel Henderson.

A largely overlooked aspect of the German air raids on Northern Ireland is the awards made to civilians for bravery during the air raids. Three George Medals and nine British Empire Medals were awarded in Northern Ireland, and a further seven people were commended for their actions. The awards were made to Civil Defence personnel, policemen, firemen, and hospital staff.

The date of this talk is the same as when most of the awards were announced in the Belfast Gazette.

In this talk, Nigel Henderson of History Hub Ulster, will provide biographical information about the recipients, including detailed accounts of the actions for which the awards were made.

Please note: This event is onsite at PRONI only.

The lecture will take place on Thursday 7 November 2024 at PRONI (2 Titanic Boulevard, Titanic Quarter, Belfast, BT3 9HQ), starting at 1pm.
