Magennis VC

This portrait in oils of Leading Seaman James Magennis VC (1919-1986) is by Belfast-born artist Robert Taylor Carson.

Carson described Magennis as 'the perfect model - patient, attentive and completely natural' and wanted his painting to record the determination that Magennis displayed in his actions in disabling the Japanese cruiser Takao in July 1945.

For their role in this operation, Magennis and his commanding officer, Lieutenant Ian Edward Fraser were awarded the Victoria Cross (VC).

Magennis was the only person from Northern Ireland to be awarded the VC during the Second World War.

More on Magennis and the sinking of the Takao can be found at the Imperial War Museum who hold his VC and diving equipment.
